Shopify Image Size Guide: Product, Collection & Banner Sizes
Recommended Shopify image sizes for products (2048×2048), collections, slideshows and logos, plus compression tips that keep your store fast.
Shopify does not reject product photos the way Amazon does: no white-background rule, no minimum product fill, no automated suppression. That freedom is why so many stores end up with a staggered grid, soft photos on retina screens and 8 MB PNGs that make the admin crawl. This guide gives the sizes that work for every image type in a Shopify store, the hard limits Shopify does enforce, and a free workflow to batch-prepare a catalogue. Every tool linked here runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Shopify image sizes at a glance
| Image type | Recommended size | Ratio | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Product image | 2048 × 2048 px | 1:1 | Square keeps grids aligned and enables zoom | | Product image (smaller catalogue) | 1024 × 1024 px | 1:1 | Fine for accessories, no deep zoom | | Collection image | 1024 × 1024 px | 1:1 | Most themes cover-crop it to their own card shape | | Slideshow / hero banner | 1920 × 1080 px | 16:9 | Themes crop the height on mobile | | Logo | Transparent PNG, at least twice the display width | Any | Display width is set in the theme editor | | Favicon | Square PNG | 1:1 | Shopify displays it at 32 × 32 px |
Hard limits, as of 2026: 4472 × 4472 px (about 20 megapixels), 20 MB per file, and up to 250 images per product. Accepted formats are JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and HEIC. The practical minimum for a product image is about 800 px on the longest side; below that, retina screens show visible softness. Check the official Shopify product media page for the current limits, and see the Shopify hub page for the presets our tools use.
Product images: why 2048 × 2048
Shopify's own recommendation for square product images is 2048 × 2048 px. It is large enough for zoom in every major theme, exactly twice the 1024 px card size most themes request on desktop, and under a megabyte as a JPEG at quality 85 to 90. Square is not compulsory, but consistency is: a theme's collection grid takes card height from the first image, so mixed ratios produce staggered rows and cropped products. Pick one ratio for the whole store. If your photos are rectangular, pad them rather than crop them: Square Image Maker adds a solid or blurred fill so the product stays complete.
Collection, slideshow and logo sizes
Collection images are cover-cropped by nearly every theme, so keep the subject in the centre 70% of the frame and export at 1024 × 1024 px. Slideshow and hero images should be 1920 × 1080 px; mobile layouts crop the sides, so keep text and the product near the centre. For a logo, upload a transparent PNG at least twice the width your theme displays, so a 250 px logo slot needs a 500 px file for retina screens. The favicon is a square PNG displayed at 32 × 32 px; upload a 512 × 512 version and let Shopify scale it, or generate every size with Favicon and App Icon Generator.
Keeping the store fast
Shopify serves resized, re-encoded copies of every image through its CDN, delivering WebP or AVIF to browsers that support it. So the original file size mostly affects upload time and admin performance, but the original still matters: a heavy PNG produces heavier derivatives than a clean JPEG, an image over 4472 px is rejected, and the largest variant a theme requests can only be as sharp as what you gave it. Practical targets:
- JPEG for photographs at quality 80 to 90, aiming for under 500 KB at 2048 × 2048.
- PNG only for logos, icons and graphics that need transparency.
- WebP if you want smaller uploads; Shopify accepts it directly.
Bulk Image Compressor lets you set a target such as under 500 KB and processes the whole folder at once.
Step-by-step workflow with free browser tools
- Convert iPhone HEIC files and oversized PNGs to JPEG with Image Format Converter.
- For a uniform white or coloured backdrop across the catalogue, batch-process with Background Remover and choose a solid output colour.
- Make every rectangular photo square without cropping using Square Image Maker.
- Resize the batch to 2048 × 2048 px with Marketplace Preset Resizer using the Shopify preset. A WebP preset is there too if you prefer smaller files.
- Compress with Bulk Image Compressor to a target under 500 KB.
- Rename the files descriptively with Bulk Rename + Convert: search engines read filenames, so blue-linen-shirt-front.jpg beats IMG_4821.jpg.
- Verify the batch against Shopify's limits in Image Dimension and Size Checker, download the ZIP and upload.
For a hero banner with several products, Product Collage / Grid Maker builds a 2 × 2 or 3 × 3 layout you can export at 1920 × 1080.
Shopify compared with the marketplaces
| Platform | Recommended product size | Hard limits | Background rule | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Shopify | 2048 × 2048 px | 4472 × 4472 px, 20 MB | None, just be consistent | | Amazon | 2000 × 2000 px | 10,000 px longest side, 10 MB | Pure white main image | | Etsy | 2000 px on the shortest side, 4:3 | 20 MB | None, 4:3 thumbnail crop | | eBay | 1600 × 1600 px | 9000 px longest side, 12 MB | White or neutral preferred |
If you also sell on Amazon, prepare that set first at 2000 × 2000 on white; those images pass every Shopify requirement.
Common mistakes
- Uploading photos straight from the camera at 6000 × 4000 px. They exceed the 4472 px limit and are rejected, or, if slightly smaller, bloat the media library.
- Mixing portrait and square images in one collection, which staggers the grid.
- Using PNG for photographs. A 2048 px PNG photo is often 5 to 8 MB against 400 KB for a visually identical JPEG.
- Relying on the theme to crop the important part of a collection image. Crop it yourself with Image Cropper so the subject sits where you want it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify compress my images automatically?
Yes. Shopify re-encodes each image into multiple widths and serves the most suitable one to each visitor, often as WebP or AVIF. It cannot add detail you did not upload and it does not shrink your original in the media library, so compress before uploading.
Should I upload JPEG or WebP?
Either works. JPEG is the safest choice because every downstream tool, marketplace and email platform accepts it. Upload WebP if you want smaller originals.
What if my product photos are different shapes?
Choose one ratio for the store, ideally square, and pad the odd ones out rather than cropping. Square Image Maker fills the extra space with a colour or a blurred copy of the photo, so tall and wide products both end up on identical 2048 × 2048 canvases.
Is 4472 × 4472 better than 2048 × 2048?
Rarely. The largest variant a theme serves is well under 4472 px, so the extra pixels are never seen by shoppers and only slow uploads. Use the maximum only where extreme zoom matters, such as artwork or jewellery, and even then 3000 px is plenty.
