Government portals, job boards, university admissions and exam registrations all seem to pick a different number: "photo under 50 KB", "signature under 20 KB", "document under 200 KB". Ordinary compressors give you a quality slider and leave you guessing. How it works

The reducer first searches JPG or WebP quality with a binary search to find the highest setting under the cap. If even the lowest usable quality is still too large, it scales the longest side down in steps and searches again, so very small targets such as 20 KB are reached with the least possible loss of size. Metadata is stripped automatically, which alone saves 20–100 KB on a camera JPEG.

Job portals and university forms in South Asia commonly ask for a photo under 50 KB and a signature under 20 KB; those two are the most searched targets, and the tool reaches them from a typical 3–5 MB phone photo in one pass. Limits change, so verify with the official source.

Why an exact target beats a quality slider

  • Portals reject by bytes, not by how the photo looks, so a file at 101 KB fails a 100 KB rule.
  • Guessing a quality and re-checking wastes time; the search does it in a second.
  • Keeping dimensions matters when the form also specifies pixels: reducing 600×600 to 400×400 to save bytes would trade one rejection for another.

Tips

  • Crop to the subject first. A tight head-and-shoulders crop has far fewer pixels to encode than a full-frame photo, so it reaches 20 KB at a higher quality.
  • Choose JPG. PNG is lossless and often cannot reach small targets without heavy downscaling.
  • Do not reduce an already reduced file; go back to the original each time you need a different target.

Frequently asked questions

How does it reduce a photo to 20 KB without ruining it?

It first strips metadata, then binary-searches JPG quality for the largest value that fits under 20 KB. If that is not enough, it reduces the longest side in steps, for instance from 1200 px to 900 px, and repeats. A cropped head-and-shoulders photo usually reaches 20 KB at around 400–500 px with acceptable quality.

Will the dimensions change?

Only when the target cannot be met at the lowest usable quality. A 600×600 photo compresses to 100 KB easily and stays 600×600. Asking the same photo for 10 KB forces downscaling, and the result card tells you the new size so you can check it against any pixel rule.

Can I compress an image to 50 KB in PNG format?

Rarely. PNG is lossless, so its size depends on pixel count and detail, not a quality setting; a colour photo at 50 KB in PNG would be very small. Use JPG for photos and reserve PNG for signatures or graphics with transparency, which compress well as PNG.

Is the result always under the target, or just close?

Always at or under. The search only accepts encodes that fit within the number you set, and it keeps the largest of those, so you get the best quality that still passes a byte check. If a portal says "up to 100 KB", the output will be 100 KB or less.

Does it work for documents and signatures as well as photos?

Yes. Scanned documents, CNIC or passport scans and signature images all go through the same process. For text-heavy scans, WebP or JPG at a moderate quality keeps text readable at 100–200 KB; for signatures, crop to the ink first so almost every byte goes to the strokes.
