Turn a photographed signature into a clean transparent PNG

Contracts, seller verification forms, invoices, tax filings and email footers all ask for a signature image. Photograph one on paper and you get grey paper, a shadow from your hand and a slightly yellow cast that looks terrible pasted over a white PDF. The Signature Background Remover isolates the ink, drops everything else, and gives you a signature png with a truly transparent background that sits cleanly on any document.

How it works

1. Sign with a dark pen on plain white paper, then scan it or photograph it in daylight and upload the file.
2. Leave Threshold on Auto. It uses the Otsu method, which finds the brightness value that best separates ink from paper by analysing the histogram, so most photos need no adjustment. Drag the slider only if strokes break up or paper speckles survive.
3. Set Smoothing to soften jagged pixel edges, pick an Ink colour (black, blue or a custom HEX), and keep Crop to content on so the PNG is trimmed to the signature itself.
4. Download the transparent PNG, or drop in several signatures or initials and take the ZIP.

Unlike the AI Background Remover, which is trained on people and products, this tool works on pixel brightness. That is exactly right for ink on paper: it keeps thin strokes and pen texture intact instead of guessing at an object outline.

Why a transparent signature matters

• PDF and Word placement. A JPG signature has an opaque white box around it that covers lines, text and stamps. A transparent PNG shows only the ink.
• Consistent colour. Recolouring the ink to pure black or a standard blue hides the fading and uneven pressure of a real pen and matches the rest of the document.
• File size. A cropped signature PNG is typically 20–60 KB, well under the 100 KB or 200 KB limits that many application portals set for signature uploads.
• Reuse. Make it once and sign invoices, seller agreements, delivery notes and letters without a scanner.

Tips

• Use a black or dark blue pen with a medium tip; fine gel pens produce faint lines that thresholding may break.
• Photograph from directly above in daylight, with no shadow from your hand or phone, and keep the paper flat. A 1000 px wide crop of the signature is enough resolution.
• If speckles remain, raise the threshold slightly or add a little smoothing; if strokes thin out, lower it.

Privacy

A signature is identity data. This tool does the thresholding, smoothing and cropping with the Canvas API on your device, so your images never leave your browser and no copy of your signature exists anywhere but on your own machine. It also works offline once loaded, and it is the safest way to remove background from signature files you would rather not upload anywhere.
