How to use the Square Image Maker

  1. 1Drop the photos you want to make square.
  2. 2Choose the ratio (1:1 by default, or 4:5, 4:3, 16:9 and more).
  3. 3Pick a solid colour or blurred fill, set the margin and the output size.
  4. 4Process, then download individually or as a ZIP.

Most product photos come out of a camera at 3:2 or 4:3, but nearly every storefront grid is square. Crop and you lose the edge of the product; upload as is and the marketplace crops for you, often through the handle of a mug or the toe of a shoe. The Square Image Maker solves this the other way round: it makes a square photo without cropping by adding padding around the picture, so the whole product stays visible and every thumbnail in your catalogue lines up. If you have ever searched for how to make image square without losing anything, this is the answer.

How it works

  1. Drop the images you want to fix, up to 200 at a time.
  2. Choose the target ratio. 1:1 is the default, and 4:5, 4:3, 3:4, 16:9 and 9:16 are there for social posts and banners.
  3. Pick the fill: a solid colour (white by default, or any hex value) or a blurred fill that stretches a soft copy of the photo behind it.
  4. Set a margin percentage if you want breathing room, and an output size such as 2048 or 2000 px.
  5. Process, check the previews, and download individually or as a ZIP.

The tool works out the longer side, centres the original inside a canvas of the chosen ratio and paints the padding. Nothing in the photo is resampled unless you also ask for an output size, so detail is preserved. It is the simplest way to add padding to image files in bulk.

Why it matters

Square is the default in e-commerce and the numbers are strict enough to fail an upload:

  • Shopify recommends 2048×2048 px product images and warns that inconsistent aspect ratios break collection grids.
  • Daraz accepts square images only, from 330×330 up to 3000×3000 px, with roughly 3% tolerance.
  • TikTok Shop wants 1:1 between 600 and 4000 px.
  • Amazon main images are typically 2000×2000 and must sit on pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255), which is exactly what the white fill gives you.
  • Instagram feed posts look best at 1080×1080 or 1080×1350 (4:5).

Padding rather than cropping also keeps the product from being cut off, which is a requirement rather than a preference on most marketplaces.

Tips

  • Use white fill for marketplace main images and blurred fill for lifestyle or social images where a flat border would look odd.
  • Amazon expects the product to fill at least 85% of the frame, so keep the margin low (0 to 5%) for main images; for a long or wide item you may need to crop first with the Image Cropper.
  • Set the output size at the same time so the whole batch leaves at 2048 px for Shopify or 2000 px for Amazon, or hand it to the Amazon Product Image Resizer afterwards.
  • For a visible frame around the padded image, run the results through the Add Border / Frame tool.
  • For story and reel sizes, the Social Media Image Resizer already knows the exact dimensions.

Privacy

Everything is done with the Canvas API inside your browser. Your images never leave your browser, no upload takes place and there is no account to create, so you can process an entire catalogue on a train with no connection.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool crop any part of my photo?

No. The Square Image Maker only adds space around the image, never removes it, which is the difference between padding and cropping. The whole product remains visible. If you also want to trim the edges, run the Image Cropper first and then pad the result to square.

What is the blurred fill option for?

Blurred fill places an enlarged, heavily blurred copy of the same photo behind the original, so the padding takes on its colours instead of a flat border. It suits lifestyle photos, social posts and anything on a coloured page. For marketplace main images use a solid white fill instead.

Can I make 4:5 or 16:9 images too?

Yes. Besides 1:1 the ratio menu includes 4:5 and 3:4 for portrait feeds, 4:3 for Etsy thumbnails, and 16:9 or 9:16 for banners and stories. The same padding logic applies: the photo is centred and the remaining space is filled with your chosen colour or blur.

What output size should I choose for each marketplace?

Use 2048 px for Shopify, 2000 px for Amazon and Etsy square photos, 1600 px for eBay, 1200 px for TikTok Shop and 1000 px for Daraz. Setting an output size resamples the whole padded image, so start from originals that are already at least that large to avoid softness.

Will white padding pass Amazon's white background rule?

The white fill is exactly RGB 255, 255, 255, so the padding itself passes. The original photo's own background must also be white; if it is grey or off-white, remove it with the Background Remover first. Keep the margin small so the product still fills at least 85% of the frame.
