Amazon Product Image Requirements (2026 Guide)
Every Amazon image rule explained: 2000×2000 main image, pure white background, 85% product fill, accepted formats, and how to fix rejected images for free.
Amazon is the strictest big marketplace for product photos, and it enforces the rules automatically: a main image with an off-white background, a product that sits too small in the frame, or a file under 1000 px can get a listing suppressed from search until you replace it. This guide lists every requirement, explains why images get rejected, and walks through a free workflow. Every tool on this site runs entirely in your browser, so your photos are never uploaded to a server.
Amazon image requirements at a glance
| Requirement | Rule | | --- | --- | | Main image background | Pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255 | | Product fill | At least 85% of the frame | | Minimum size | 1000 px on the longest side (required for zoom) | | Recommended size | 2000 × 2000 px square | | Maximum size | 10,000 px on the longest side | | File size | Under 10 MB per image | | Accepted formats | JPEG (preferred), PNG, GIF (non-animated), TIFF | | Colour mode | sRGB or CMYK | | Images per listing | Up to 9 uploaded; 7 shown by default on the product page | | Text, logos, watermarks, borders on main image | Not allowed |
These are the published rules as of 2026. Amazon adds category-specific guidance (apparel, jewellery and shoes have their own style guides), so verify on the official Amazon product image requirements page before a large upload, and see the Amazon hub page for the presets our tools use.
Main image rules in detail
Pure white background
Amazon's search grid and product page are white, so the main image must blend into them. Amazon means pure white: RGB 255, 255, 255. A light-box photo that looks white to the eye is often RGB 245 to 250, and that faint grey halo is the most common reason a main image is flagged. The fix is to cut the product out and place it on a generated white layer rather than brightening the photo. Background Remover does this with an on-device AI model and offers a pure white output.
The 85% fill rule
The product should occupy at least 85% of the longest dimension of the frame. A small item centred on a huge white canvas looks like a thumbnail in search results and is rejected on quality grounds. Crop tightly to the product first, then pad the result to a square rather than stretching it.
Size and zoom
Hover zoom only works when the longest side is at least 1000 px. Amazon's own guidance suggests 1600 px or larger, and 2000 × 2000 px is the size most sellers standardise on: a crisp zoom without going anywhere near the 10 MB ceiling. There is no benefit beyond about 3000 px, and anything over 10,000 px is refused outright.
What the main image must not contain
- Text, logos, badges, watermarks or borders of any kind.
- Props, accessories or packaging that are not included with the product.
- Multiple colour variants or several views in one frame; use secondary images for those.
- Heavy shadows. A soft natural shadow is fine; a dramatic one is not.
Secondary images and A+ content
Secondary images (PT01 to PT08 in Amazon's naming) are far more relaxed. Lifestyle shots, scale references, infographics with feature callouts and comparison charts are all allowed. Keep them at 2000 × 2000 px so zoom works on every slot. A+ content modules use their own sizes; the standard image-with-text module is 970 × 600 px. Product Infographic Maker starts from a 2000 × 2000 canvas with callouts, arrows and feature bullets.
Why Amazon rejects images
- Background is not pure white, usually RGB 240 to 254 from a light box or a poor cut-out.
- Product fills well under 85% of the frame.
- Longest side is below 1000 px, or the photo was upscaled from a tiny original and looks soft.
- HEIC or WebP files. Amazon accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF and TIFF only, so iPhone photos need converting.
- A file over 10 MB, typically an uncompressed TIFF or a 6000 px PNG.
Step-by-step workflow with free browser tools
- Audit the batch in Image Dimension and Size Checker with the Amazon rule set selected, and note which files fail on size, format or ratio.
- Convert HEIC or WebP files to JPEG with Image Format Converter.
- Fix colour and sharpness in bulk with Photo Enhancer.
- Cut out the product with Background Remover in batch mode and choose the white output.
- Optionally add a subtle floor shadow with Drop Shadow and Reflection Adder so the product does not appear to float.
- Resize and pad to 2000 × 2000 px with Amazon Product Image Resizer. It pads with pure white instead of cropping, so the product stays complete and centred.
- Compress everything with Bulk Image Compressor at JPEG quality 85 to 92; a 2000 × 2000 product photo should land between 300 KB and 1 MB.
- Run the checker once more, download the ZIP and upload.
Which Amazon preset should you choose?
| Preset | Best for | Trade-off | | --- | --- | --- | | Main image 2000 × 2000 (white) | Default for every main image | Slightly larger files, best zoom | | Main image 1600 × 1600 (white) | Source photos between 1600 and 1900 px | Good zoom, smaller files | | Minimum zoom 1000 × 1000 (white) | Old catalogues with small originals | Zoom is soft, no headroom | | Lifestyle / secondary 2000 × 2000 | Scene shots for PT slots | Cover fit may trim the edges | | A+ content module 970 × 600 | A+ image-with-text modules | Landscape only, not for listing slots |
If your originals are at least 2000 px, always pick the first preset. Image Upscaler can rescue an old listing with small originals, but a reshoot is better when zoom quality matters.
Common mistakes
- Brightening the background in a photo editor instead of replacing it, which also blows out white products.
- Stretching a rectangular photo to a square instead of padding it.
- Leaving a transparent PNG background. It renders white on the product page but grey or black in some ad placements, so bake in white.
- Naming files randomly. Bulk uploads expect ASIN.MAIN.jpg, ASIN.PT01.jpg and so on.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Amazon main image have to be square?
Not strictly, but the product page displays images in a square frame, so a non-square image gets white bars anyway. Padding to 2000 × 2000 yourself gives you control over centring and the 85% fill.
Can I use a PNG with a transparent background?
You can upload PNG, but a transparent background is not the same as a white one and renders unpredictably in ads and mobile apps. Export a flattened JPEG with a white background; it is the format Amazon prefers and it produces smaller files.
Why was my image rejected when the background looks white?
Because it is almost white. Cameras and light boxes rarely produce RGB 255 across the whole frame, and Amazon's automated check samples the corners and edges. Replace the background with a generated white layer instead of trying to whiten the photo.
How many images should I upload?
Fill all seven visible slots: one main image plus six secondary images covering angles, scale, details, lifestyle and an infographic. Two more can be uploaded but are not shown by default.
